Jesus went first. In everything we are to do, He went first to show us the way, so if you’re ever wondering, just look for what He did in a similar situation and do that. (I’m talking to myself here, but you can listen in if you want to.)
He interpreted the Psalms as if they were talking about Him (which they were. and because I’m becoming more like Jesus, they’re really for me, too.) Peter made this clear during His first sermon to the Jewish masses on the day of Pentecost; filled with the Spirit of God, He quoted King David, who’d said about Jesus:
I always see the Lord before me… (stop right there. Jesus always saw His God before Him. He saw the holy in the midst of the ordinary. I want to live like that! As for me, Jesus promised He’d never leave, so He must be here somewhere. Lord, sanctify and open the eyes of my imagination so I can see you there and do what I see you doing. Always. I love to play follow the leader.)
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. (Yes. Sure and confident of His Father’s presence right here beside Him, knowing that He was in the center of His will, Jesus moved with unprecedented confidence through this world. I am too, also. Like a phantom through this realm, completely unaffected by circumstances that others may trip over and care too much about, I am to live believing God is right there. Q: How to detach like that yet still feel compassion for people and be of earthly good? A: By being utterly focused on Jesus and doing whatever it takes to remain in my Father’s will. The rub: To do what I’m seeing Jesus do, then I must die to what I want. I’ve got to ask what He wants [go talk to that person]…admit what I had wanted [a latte and some peace with my book]…and do what He wants instead. Help me be like a phantom here, Lord. Not care or get scared. Walk in the spirit. Give no provision to the flesh, moving like a ghost in the midst of a hurricane. Listening and watching you, empowered by the Holy Spirit. You’re my only hope to be able to do this for more than thirty seconds at a time….)
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope. (Ooh! Evidence that I’m walking in the spirit: a glad heart, a rejoicing mouth, a body [self] that is hopeful. Notice how complaining is nowhere to be seen in this portrait. This totally describes how Jesus lived: positive. He knew His Father’s character, that He’s good, and everything He’s ever done has been good…so what’s to come will be good, too. How’s that for hope? Let me know Your goodness for sure, so hope may become my first reaction.)
Because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay… (Jesus lived in trust of these words. How He could endure people always accusing Him of lying when He told them that He was the Messiah…How he could withstand their rejection and insults wven as he went to the cross and died in their place…how He could receive people’s adoration without becoming prideful or arrogant…How He could stay matter-of-fact and focused on His mission at hand…How He could look past the suffering to their salvation later and see them standing there smiling, being His JOY…How He could remember who He was past all the confusion of the world always in His face: He knew that His Gather would most surely restore Him no matter what happened. He was so certain of His Dad’s perfect love that there was no room for fear or doubt inside Him. He totally believed that He was kept by the power of God. That belief allowed the power of God to fill His life. (Yes. Hear my prayer, Lord. Me too.)
You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. (Jesus got the same amount of time to pray as we do. Difference is, He took it. That was when He met with His Father; that’s all He got on earth to connect with the One He’d always been with for eternity past. His Dad downloaded what was on His heart, and so did Jesus. The One in heaven downloaded instructions to the One on earth that way. That’s where God reminded His Son Jesus of His love for Him, gave special warnings about what was coming down the pike, went over the plan again…this prayer conversation lifestyle is how God of heaven taught Jesus what to teach all of us…ultimate truth…paths of life. He showed Jesus the paths of life so He could show us.
Ultimately, Jesus used one of those paths to come right back to the world that had done everything to push Him away. This path rose Him from death to re-inhabit the body men had destroyed…and improved upon it, repairing it back to original design! Do-overs bring extra power, evidently.
Jesus is the first (re) born of many brethren. If we follow Him, He’ll show us how to use the paths of life that defy death and lead to hope eternal. He’s opened the way, Lori, and anyone else who is reading. He’s showing you how His Father really does want you to come and be filled with joy in His presence. He’s done all the work.
Fill me with Your Spirit and lead me into joy!
